The grunge rock band Everclear was formed in Portland, Oregon in 1992 by ex-Colorfinger member Art Alexakis (guitar/vocals), bassist Craig Montoya and drummer Scott Cuthbert. The trio released their debut EP, World of Noise, on the independent Fire Records label in 1993, after which Cuthbert was replaced by Greg Eklund. Following an extensive U.S. tour Everclear signed to Capitol Records, who released the group's second album, Sparkle in Fade, in 1995. Thanks to hit singles like "Santa Monica" and "Heroin Girl" the record was a success, and Alexakis became one of the most visible alternative rock frontmen since Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, launching a solo tour and making frequent media appearances. Everclear returned in 1997 with So Much for the Afterglow, another multi-platinum smash hit that spawned four singles, "Everything to Everyone," "I Will Buy You a New Life," "Father of Mine," and "One Hit Wonder." The group followed up three years later with sister albums Songs From an American Movie, Vol. 1: Learning How to Smile, released in July 2000, and Songs From an American Movie, Vol. 2: Good Time For a Bad Attitude, released in November 2000.
