Urban pop rhythm and blues rocker, Maxwell, revolutionized the world of romantic, seductive sounds with his debut album, Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite. Following in the tradition of Prince's demented sexual wails and Smokey Robinson's suave yet subtle swooning, Maxwell has found his niche somewhere in the cross-section of both. Maxwell was born in Brooklyn and began playing music when he was 17 years old. An old friend graced him with an old Casio keyboard, which enabled him to begin composing and hitting the New York club scene. Columbia snatched him up and his album was produced late in 1994 and featured guitarist Wah Wah Watson, saxophonist Stuart Matthewman and songwriter Leon Ware, one-time assistant on Marvin Gaye's "I Want You." The album was released in 1996 and contained the single, "Ascension (Never Wonder)," which reached the Billboard Top 40. Maxwell's sophomore effort, Embrya was released on Columbia in the summer of '98. Maxwell's third and latest album, Now, was released in 2001.
