Modern English Modern English's signature hit song, "I Melt With You," became a new wave anthem in the 1980s. Formed in Colchester, England in 1979, guitarist Robbie Grey, guitarist Gary McDowell, bassist Mick Conroy, keyboard player Stephen Walker and drummer Richard Brown released their first full-length album, Mesh & Lace (4AD) in 1981. After the wildly successful After the Snow release -- which contained "I Melt With You" -- the band left 4AD in 1984 and signed with Beggars Banquet in the U.K. and to Sire in the U.S. They released Richochet Days (1984) and Stop Start (1986) on Sire, which failed to produce the same response as earlier releases and they were dropped by Sire. The band more or less stopped playing, until Grey received a call from TVT, asking him to put the group back together. He was able to convince Conroy to come back and a new keyboardist/guitarist/singer Aaron Davidson, joined as well. In 1996, the group released Everything is Mad on Imago.
