The edgy, alternative rock sounds of Train began in 1994 when vocalist/percussionist Patrick Monahan and guitarist/vocalist Rob Hotchkiss began playing as a duo in coffeehouses and bars in San Francisco. After recruiting guitarist Jimmy Stafford, bassist Charlie Colin and drummer Scott Underwood, the band contributed two singles, "Meet Virginia" and "Free" to the Aware 5 compilation. They later released their self-titled debut on the Aware label early in 1998. An album that features Counting Crows keyboardist Charlie Gillingham, Train is steeped in soaring melodies and drenched with quirky lyrics.Drops Of Jupiter, the band's sophomore effort, was released three years later.
