With the unusually spare instrumentation of guitar/vocal and drums, the Detroit - based brother and sister duo of Jack and Meg White, a.k.a. the White Stripes, create a sound that recalls the rawest of white blues/ rock bands of the '60s, as well as the stripped - down rockabilly of the Flat Duo Jets. Formed in 1997, the White Stripes released a self - titled debut album on the Detroit indie label Sympathy For The Record Industry two years later, followed by De Stijl in 2000.
