Ronnie Milsap - Given his inspiringly electric musical upbringing, it is understandable why Ronnie Milsap would have explored so many different styles before he ultimately made his commitment to country music.
Born blind in 1946, Milsap says he listened exclusively to country music during his first years. But once in school, the Robbinsville, North Carolina native became exposed to a wider spectrum of sounds--sounds he was determined to reproduce, adapt and transform for his own delight.
By the time he was seven, Milsap was proficient on the violin. At eight, he was a skillful pianist. In the years soon to follow, he would add the guitar, woodwinds and percussion to his catalog of talents.
Musically, his tastes roamed from country to classical to rhythm & blues. And he played them all. After he finished high school--and uncertain he could ever make a living with his music.
Smoothly delivered but filled with honky-tonk bitterness, the song was his first RCA single to chart. "I Hate You," released the same year Milsap joined RCA, quickly soared to No. 10 on the country rankings. Of the 20 songs in this musical treasure chest, 16 are No. 1's. Among the highlights are three Grammy-winning singles: "(There's) No Getting Over Me," "Lost In The Fifties Tonight (In The Still Of The Night)" and the powerful duet with Kenny Rogers, "Make No Mistake, She's Mine." Although Milsap never had the impact in pop that he did in country, he continued his crossover activity into the mid-'80s. In fact, "(There's) No Getting Over Me" went all the way to No. 5, his highest pop position ever. And his "Any Day Now," which is also included in this collection, was a No. 1 on the adult contemporary charts as well as on the country listings.
