A superior pianist who is growing in stature year-by-year, Eric Reed began playing piano when he was two, and in his childhood often performed in his father's church. He started classical lessons when he was five, moved with his family to Los Angeles when he was 11 and first met Wynton Marsalis when he was 17, impressing the trumpeter. Reed played in L.A. with John Clayton and the Gerald Wilson Orchestra, toured with Marsalis when he was 18, worked with Freddie Hubbard and Joe Henderson and in 1989 became a regular member of Wynton Marsalis's group, replacing Marcus Roberts. Eric Reed has recorded with Marsalis and led a few of his own sessions for Candid, Mojazz and Impulse. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
