Teen Idols - This promises to be an exciting evening of
nonstop memories hit after solid gold hit! Raise your hand if you remember the
song "I'm Henry VIII, I Am." OK, now raise it if you remember performing that
tune as a kindergartner, while standing atop a coffee table in your parents'
living room, to an audience of family members. More than once. And remember when
you acted out "The Monkees" with your friends back in the late '60s (you did
that, right?) Finally, who among you still to this day can sing the lyrics to
"Seattle" without prompting -- and with them, vividly recall the image of the
prettiest little logger ever to grace a short-lived TV series? That's how I find
myself writing this concert preview of Peter Noone, Mickey Dolenz and Bobby
Sherman. And when you think about it, it's as good a set of credentials as any,
really. Because in the case of all three, it was always more about image and
bubblegum appeal than it was about music, and now it's mainly about nostalgia.
In Noone, the voice of Herman's Hermits, you'll get such hits as "Mrs. Brown,
You've Got a Lovely Daughter," "Can't You Hear My Heartbeat," "Wonderful World"
and the aforementioned "Henry VIII." We'd expect Dolenz to deliver The Monkees'
"I'm a Believer," "Last Train to Clarksville," "Pleasant Valley Sunday" and a
raft of other studio-engineered hits. Sherman might attempt "Julie, Do Ya Love
Me" and maybe "La La La (If I Had You)," but the bulk of his set probably won't
shake many cobwebs loose either. "Here Come the Brides," that short-lived '60s
TV series set in the "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" northwest, put his poster
image on every hot-pink bedroom wall in America for a time, but it didn't make
him a Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Famer. Buying a ticket to this show means buying a
few hours of baby-boomer memories. There's certainly nothing wrong with that.
Just don't be surprised if you find yourself thinking more about what you were
doing back when these songs were first popular than concentrating on the artists
in front of you. It's the mind's defense against the sight of wrinkles on former
teen idols.
