For a recent birthday, Jane Brody received a T-shirt that proclaimed "Still Perfect--After All These Years." Once she stopped laughing, she began to think that it really should have said "Still Trying--After All These Years"--still trying to be good to her body, to fuel it right, and to move it regularly so that it will continue to be good to her. To keep her body from "rusting out," she insists on daily physical activity, alternating between walking, cycling, swimming, ice skating, playing tennis, hiking, and occasionally roller-blading and cross-country skiing. The result is a woman who is more robust, energetic, youthful, and trim in middle age than she was as a teenager. Jane Brody received her BS degree in biochemistry from the New York State College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University in 1962. In 1963, she earned an MS degree in journalism and mass communication (degree focus: science writing) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Journalism. In 1976, she became the Personal Health columnist for The New York Times. Her widely read and quoted column continues to appear every Tuesday in The Times and in more than 100 other newspapers around the country. In addition, her articles on other aspects of science and medicine appear frequently in the weekly "Science Times" section of The New York Times. Ms. Brody has also written scores of magazine articles, and she lectures frequently on health and nutrition to audiences both lay and professional. She has appeared on hundreds of radio and television shows throughout the country, and has received numerous prestigious awards for journalistic excellence. In 1987, she was awarded an honorary doctorate from Princeton University, and in 1993 she received an honorary doctorate from Hamline University in St. Paul. Ms. Brody has written nine books: Secrets of Good Health; You Can Fight Cancer and Win; Jane Brody's Nutrition Book; Jane Brody's The New York Times Guide to Personal Health; Jane Brody's Good Food Book; Jane Brody's Good Food Gourmet; Jane Brody's Good Seafood Book; Jane Brody's Cold and Flu Fighter; and Jane Brody's Allergy Fighter, published in April 1997. In addition, The New York Times Book of Health, a compendium of revealing articles about complex health issues by Brody and colleagues, was published in June 1997.
