Jane E. Smith is CEO for Business and Professional Women/USA. Dr. Smith oversees the management of the organization's National Headquarters including the National Federation, the BPW Foundation, the Political Action Committee, and Business Woman Magazine. She previously served as President and CEO of the National Council of Negro Women, focusing on membership development and the finances. Dr. Smith began her professional career in 1975 at Spelman College in Atlanta , Georgia , where she served as Assistant Professor of Sociology, Director of Freshman Studies, and Assistant to the President. As Assistant to the President, she managed a multi-year, seven million dollar Advanced Institutional Development Grant. From 1979 through 1980, she was Assistant Vice President for Development at Atlanta University . Her responsibilities included grants management for federally supported programs. She was a member of the President's strategic planning team. From 1981 to 1990, Dr. Smith was the Managing Director for INROADS/Atlanta and INROADS/Detroit, where she managed career development services for over 300 college students and 50 sponsoring corporations. In 1991, Mrs. Coretta Scott King invited Dr. Smith to serve as Director of Development at the Martin Luther King Center for Nonviolent Social Change. From 1994 to 1998, she directed The Atlanta Project, an urban initiative created by former President Jimmy Carter. This project fostered partnerships for 20,000 community advocates, 20 churches, numerous private and government service agencies, and 20 corporations. The Atlanta Project was recognized by the Atlanta Regional Commission and by Former Vice President Al Gore. Over the last twenty years, Dr. Smith has served on numerous city planning commissions and local boards, including the District of Columbia Commission on Ear1y Childhood Education (Chair), an Empowerment Zone board, Leadership Atlanta, a rapid transit authority (Vice Chair), the Girl Scouts, and the United Way. She has also served on Advisory Boards for Prudential Insurance Company, Citizen and Southern Bank (now Bank of America) and Fleet Bank. She has received numerous local and national awards including recognitions by grassroots organizations, Allstate Insurance Company, the NAACP and the YWCA. She is the recipient of the Emory University Alumni Medal and the first Johnnetta B. Cole Spelman College Alumnae
