One of the most admired men in the world of sports, Auerbach is President of the Boston Celtics and the author of five books. His latest, MBA: Management By Auerbach, features an inside look at one of America's most successful organizations and is a primer on his personal management secrets. Renowned for his ability to bring out the best in his teams, Auerbach led the Celtics to fifteen NBA Championships. His time tested strategies are applicable to every kind of business setting today. In sports and in business, it's the bottom line that counts and Auerbach certainly knows about winning. No coach in the history of the NBA has had a more profound impact on the game than the Boston Celtics' Red Auerbach. During his reign as head coach and general manager, he established many records that still stand, and that many people believe will never be broken. Auerbach led the team to its first championship in the 1956-57 season. His teams went on to win an unprecedented 16 National Basketball Association championships - including eight consecutive titles between 1959 and 1966. Auerbach played a pioneering role in race relations in the NBA. In 1950, he and Joe Lapchick, coach of the New York Knickerbockers, brought up the first two black players to wear NBA uniforms. When he retired as coach in 1966, Auerbach hired his star center, Bill Russell, as the NBA's first black head coach. In later years he hired two other black former Celtics - Tom "Satch" Sanders and K.C. Jones - to coach the team. Auerbach has received numerous distinguished awards and honors throughout his career, including induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1968 and being selected as "Greatest Coach in the History of the NBA." He has received seven honorary degrees and is the author of five books, including, "Basketball for the Players, the Fan and Coach," the largest selling basketball book in print. Auerbach has been a great source of encouragement for youth throughout the Commonwealth. He established The Red Auerbach Fund in 1985 to promote athletic recreational and other youth development activities in Boston and throughout Massachusetts. His Red Auerbach Youth Foundation sponsors the annual Boston Celtics Youth Basketball Clinic, the Massachusetts State Free Throw Championship, and the Red Auerbach Freshman/Sophomore and All-State Track Meets. The Foundation is also responsible for issuing eight annual scholarships to Massachusetts high school students based on academic, athletic, and leadership qualities.
