Some would say that an exclusive interview with the President of the United States during the most controversial sex scandal to ever hit the White House is the interview of a lifetime. Others would say interviewing Fidel Castro in the wake of unprecedented U.S. sanctions relief or the conversation with Pope John Paul II was the most significant. Still many might declare the interview with the reclusive artist formerly known as Prince the most candid dialogue of his career. Time selected him as one of America's 50 most promising young leaders under the age of 40. Ebony profiled him as one of Black America's future leaders. Vanity Fair inducted him into their 1996 Hall of Fame. The New York Post screamed "Look out, Larry King, here comes Tavis Smiley!" George magazine sought his political predictions. The Los Angeles Times says he's on the "fast track, left lane." Essence raves that his political writings "show us how to correct America's swerve to the right." And Buzz magazine rates him one of the "100 coolest people in Los Angeles." Formerly the host of BET Tonight with Tavis Smiley on Black Entertainment Television, Smiley is the author of the critically acclaimed book, HARD LEFT: Straight Talk About the Wrongs of the Right (Anchor/Doubleday). His most recent book, ON AIR: The Best of Tavis Smiley on the Tom Joyner Morning Show (Pines One Publications), was released last spring. He offers political commentary on the Tom Joyner Morning Show, syndicated by the ABC Radio Network. Additionally, he appears regularly as guest host of CNN's Both Sides. Educated at Indiana University, Smiley was previously a top aide to former Los Angeles mayor Tom Bradley, and he has since provided analysis on everything from CNBC to Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher, from Geraldo to World News Tonight with Peter Jennings. One of ten children, Smiley is single and lives in both Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. In his spare time, he enjoys a good game of Scrabble with friends.
