Canadian singer-songwriter Amanda Marshall draws from her Trinidadian heritage to create untraditional adult contemporary music. Born in Toronto in 1973, Marshall was "discovered" singing in a Toronto nightclub by Canadian blues rocker Jeff Healy. At the age of 18, Marshall went on the road opening for Healy and later toured with Tom Cochrane. This exposure piqued the interest of Sony Music Canada, who signed Marshall in 1995 at the age of 22. Her eponymous debut was released in Canada in October 1995 and in the United States (on Epic Records) in the spring of 1996. Amanda Marshall, produced by David Tyson (Alannah Myles, Hall and Oates), charted in both countries thanks to the success of the radio single "Birmingham." Christina Cramer
