DAVID ESSEX starred as Jesus in the stage musical, GODSPELL in 1971/2. The show was a box-office sell-out, and paved the way for a highly successful career in theatre, film and particularly in music.
Whilst still appearing in GODSPELL David started filming THAT'LL BE THE DAY and wrote a song for the film. The producers pronounced the song "too weird" and refused to accept it. With help from Jeff Wayne, the song was released on the CBS label and topped the charts, reaching Number One in the US. That song was ROCK ON.
In 1974 David filmed STARDUST - the sequel to THAT'LL BE THE DAY - before embarking on what was to become a phenomenal career in music.
World concert tours ensued, David has a string of hit singles and albums to his credit, and he still has an enormous fan following 25 years after ROCK ON shot into the charts.
Also to his credit, David appeared in the original London stage production of EVITA making the role of Che Guevara his own. He wrote the music for SILVER DREAM RACER, in which film he starred. He wrote and appeared as Fletcher Christian in the stage musical, MUTINY and appeared in the London West End production of SHE STOOPS TO CONQUER directed by Sir Peter Hall. David is now appearing at the New Theatre, Cardiff, for a sixth season in his own Christmas musical show, ROBINSON CRUSOE.
