Dr. Donald H. Straszheim, a long-time Wall Street economist and executive, as well as a China specialist, is one of America’s best-known and sought-after speakers on the current economic and financial crisis, the overall investment and markets outlook, the government’s ever-changing response, the new reality in Washington, the often-overlooked global linkages of this episode, as well as developments and future trends in China, Asia and the elsewhere.

He is Managing Principal of Straszheim Global Advisors, Inc., focused on economics, financial markets, business and policy consulting, founded in 2001 with offices Los Angeles and Beijing. He helps U.S. companies understand China, and Chinese companies understand the U.S. Over the last two years he has been heavily engaged in analysis of the current financial crisis, the changing complexities of banking, Wall Street and housing and how companies should position themselves.

From 1985 to 1997, Straszheim served as global Chief Economist for Merrill Lynch and Co., headquartered in New York City. He led a team of economists and analysts located in New York, London, Frankfurt, Paris, Johannesburg, Mexico City, Tokyo, Singapore, Mumbai, Hong Kong, Sydney and elsewhere. Serving the firm’s private wealth management, investment banking, M&A, and institutional sales and trading arms, he did over 100 podium speeches a year to leaders in the corporate, industrial, government and institutional communities. Equally comfortable in the boardroom, at corporate retreats or at trade association gatherings, he was Merrill Lynch’s chief economic spokesperson. A popular speaker, traveling globally, for 10 consecutive years he was voted to Institutional Investor’s All-Star team, Wall Street’s most prestigious award.

Since 1997 Straszheim has spent a great deal of time on (and in) China, becoming one of America’s leading experts on China’s economy, business and financial markets and how they relate to the US and other global economies. He writes regularly for the Chinese financial media and is a frequent guest on TV and radio on these topics. He is sought out by the US and Chinese business communities for guidance on US opportunities in China, and vice versa.

From 1997 to 2001, he was President of the Milken Institute in Los Angeles, a not-for-profit economic think-tank. He created (1998), managed and produced (1998-2002) the now world-renowned annual Milken Institute Global Conference (Los Angeles).

From 2006 to 2008, Straszheim served as Vice Chairman of Roth Capital Partners, a boutique broker-dealer, spearheading its new China initiative, building it from zero to well over half of the company’s business. He regularly interacted with US investors in China as well as with Chinese investors and government officials involved with the US and overseas economies.

Earlier in his career, he was Chief Economist at Wharton Econometrics at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, and Chief Economist for forest products firm, Weyerhaeuser Co.
Straszheim is a Visiting Scholar at UCLA’s Anderson School of Management, serves on various private- and public-sector boards, is a past President of the Chartered Financial Analysts Society of Los Angeles, and is a regular contributor to the worldwide speaker program for the Chartered Financial Analysts Institute. He is a regular TV and radio guest on financial/economic matters, and writes regularly for publication. He earned a BS, MS and Ph.D. from Purdue University.
