Pet Shop Boys

The Pet Shop Boys avoided the '80s disco-pop path to obscurity taken by Men Without Hats and Nena and evolved into one of the most innovative and intellectual of the British synth-pop bands, creating interesting andchallenging soundscapes. While comparisons made by diehard fans to Lennon and McCartney may be laughable, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe have taken their Kraftwerk-meets-David Bowie sound on interesting forays into the worlds of pop, house and disco. The duo, singer Tennant and keyboardist Lowe, first got together in 1981 when Tennant was assistant editor of Smash Hits magazine. They struggled with demos for a few years before enjoying a fewminor hits in France and Germany. The worldwide success of "West End Girls" spawned their first LP, Please (1986), which was followed that same year by the requisite re-mix album, Disco. Actually arrived in 1987, featuring the No.1 U.K. hit "It's a Sin" anda duet with Dusty Springfield, "What Have I Done to Deserve This," which did more to revive her career than anything this side of the Pulp Fiction soundtrack. They would later collaborate with Liza Minnelli, Bernard Sumner of New Order and Johnny Marr of the Smiths. Toward the end of the 1980s, Tennant and Lowe cemented theirreputations as the ironic kings of dance pop while expanding their soundwith the disco of Introspective (1988) and mellow, intensely personal collages of Behavior (1990), which added a backdrop of old film scores and classical music to the mix. In 1991 they released a retrospective singles collection, Discography, and a sharp, deflated version of U2's "Where The Streets Have No Name." Tennant and Lowe have continued to expand the range and emotional impact of their work, most notably on 1993's Very and 1996's Bilingual. In the fall of 1999 the Pet Shop Boys embarked on their first world tour in eight years. The tour coincided with the release of the CD Nightlife, featuring "In Denial," a duet with Tennant and Kylie Minogue. Seth Hindin
