Contemporary country singer/songwriter Phil Vassar was born and raised in Lynchburg, VA, going on to study business administration at James Madison University before relocating to Nashville in 1990. Signing to EMI Music Publishing in 1996, he soon hit paydirt as the author of hits for BlackHawk ("Postmarked Birmingham"), Collin Raye ("Little Red Rodeo") and Tim McGraw ("For a Little While"); subsequent chart-toppers for Jo Dee Messina ("Bye Bye" and "I'm Alright") and Alan Jackson ("Right on the Money") earned Vassar ASCAP's 1999 Country Songwriter of the Year honors.
