With the unusually spare instrumentation of guitar/vocal and drums, the Detroit - based brother and sister duo of Jack and Meg White, a.k.a. the White Stripes, create a sound that recalls the rawest of white blues/ rock bands of the '60s, as well as the stripped - down rockabilly of the Flat Duo Jets. Formed in 1997, the White Stripes released a self - titled debut album on the Detroit indie label Sympathy For The Record Industry two years later, followed by De Stijl in 2000. White Blood Cells, the band's latest, came in 2001. David Kuner
